How to measure the correct size of nuts

Feb 08, 2025

Measure with a vernier caliper or micrometer screw
1. Outside diameter measurement
‌The outside diameter is the maximum diameter after the thread is processed and is usually used to determine the size of the nut. ‌ When measuring, place the nut on a flat workbench and make sure it is completely perpendicular to the measuring tool. Use a digital gauge or micrometer screw to gently place it on the outside diameter of the nut and record the measurement results. ‌

2. Inside diameter measurement
‌The inside diameter is the maximum diameter of the inside diameter of the thread and is also the outside diameter size of the bolt. ‌ When measuring the inside diameter with a caliper or micrometer caliper, place the tool on the inside diameter of the nut, gently rotate to ensure full contact with the thread, and then read the value. ‌

3. Pitch measurement
‌The pitch is the distance between two adjacent teeth of the thread. ‌ Use a screw gauge to measure the pitch, then add the inside diameter size to the pitch to get the size of the nut. ‌

4. Special requirements measurement
‌In some special applications, nuts may require additional measurements. ‌ For example, nuts in high temperature environments need to test their thermal expansion coefficient, and nuts with higher corrosion resistance requirements need to undergo electrochemical corrosion testing.

5. Imperial nut measurement
‌The measurement method for imperial nuts is slightly different. ‌ Use a tape measure to measure the outer circumference of the nut, or measure the diagonal distance of the hexagon from point to point to determine the size of the wrench or socket. ‌

Through the above methods, the size of the nut can be accurately measured to ensure its adaptability and reliability in practical applications.
