Pipeline connection methods

Feb 16, 2025

‌There are mainly the following types of pipeline connection methods:

‌Threaded connection‌: Connect pipes to pipes and pipes to valves through internal and external threads. This connection method is simple to manufacture and use, reliable connection, easy to use, versatile, and can be assembled and disassembled for repeated use. It is mainly used for the connection of steel pipes, copper pipes and high-pressure pipes. The disadvantage is that the pressure is low and the threads are prone to rot and leakage. ‌

‌Flange connection‌: Fix two pipes or pipe fittings on a flange plate respectively, and tighten the two flange plates with bolts to make them tightly combined. Flange connection has good strength and tightness, and is applicable to a wide range of sizes. It is mostly used for main road connection valves, check valves, water meters, water pumps, etc. The disadvantage is that it cannot be assembled and disassembled quickly, and the manufacturing cost is high. ‌

‌Welding connection‌: Join metals or other thermoplastic materials by heating, high temperature or high pressure. The welding connection interface is firm and durable, not easy to leak, and the joint strength and tightness are high. The disadvantage is that the welding joint is prone to large welding deformation and welding residual stress, which affects the bearing capacity of the joint.

‌Compression fittings‌: The pipe is compressed onto the fittings by means of locking nuts and open compression rings. This connection method is suitable for tap water and gas systems with smaller specifications, but the safety factor is relatively low. ‌

‌Compression fittings‌: The O-ring is deformed by pressure during use to produce a sealing effect. This connection method is convenient to construct and reliable, but the scope of use is relatively small and the safety factor is not high.

‌Groove connection‌: An annular groove is formed on the pipe joint and other parts, and a sleeve-type quick connector is composed of clamps, rubber sealing rings and fasteners. This connection method has the advantages of quick construction, good sealing and easy disassembly.

‌Socket connection‌: Mainly used for cast iron pipes, ceramic pipes, plastic pipes, etc. Socket connections are divided into mechanical interfaces and non-mechanical interfaces. The mechanical interface uses a pressure flange to connect with the flange on the pipe end, and the non-mechanical interface has various forms according to the different fillers.

‌Bond connection‌: Adhesives are used as bonding fillers to bond homogeneous pipes and fittings together. This connection method is easy to construct and cures quickly, but the peel strength and impact resistance of the adhesive layer are low. ‌

‌Quick connector connection and hose connection‌: Suitable for occasions where pipes need to be replaced frequently and where displacement and flexibility need to be increased in the pipe system.

These connection methods have their own advantages and disadvantages and are suitable for different pipe types and working environments. Choosing the right connection method can improve the safety and reliability of the pipe system.
